Hi,

Im not exactly new as i played GW during launch for little while. Completed the first campaign then my guild moved back to DaoC. Thought i would come back to get into the pvp but being new its all a bit overwhelming.

Im planning on just using a pvp only character and i was looking through a few builds on various websites and they included elite skills which i don't have yet. Does this mean i must play a role playing character to to capture them or is it possible to earn pvp points to buy the most important ones? So what sort of builds without the elite skills would guys recommend for a beginner? How does a equipment work with pvp only characters, do i have a choice or just what im wearing when i create the character?

Any other advice for a newbie just starting would also be appreciated, thanks

When you kill opponents and win battles in PvP you earn Balthazar Faction, which you can spend to unlock skills, elite skills and weapons' upgrades, just talk with a Priest of Balthazar to see what you can unlock.

You can modify your equipment through the equipment dialog (press "J"), which allows you to build armors and weapons using the upgrades you have unlocked in your account, without any cost.

To start PvP, i suggest you to find some good friend to play with (i didn't understand if your old friends came back to GW with you), and/or to find a good guild willing to teach new players (not so easy to find though, however you can search in these forums, in the Looking for Guild section). I could suggest you to try the PvXWiki builds at http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page, but having the right build doesn't mean much if you don't know the tactics, and how to play effectively, so the first thing i suggest you to worry about, is learning how PvP works, and having someone teaching you this in-game would be really helpful.

there is so much to teach. but its not hard to learn i guess, depends on how intelligent and determined u are.

Here's some quick advice for ya

1. You've got 4 weapon sets. Using all four is a sign of someone who knows what he's fighting. Typical weapon sets would be a
(a.) defensive set - Usually Shield and spear. With a pvp only char, you can easily unlock the different shield mods that add extra armour versus specific types of damage e.g. fire. Spear is used for building adrenaline from a safe distance and can have an enchanting mod for enchs.
(b.) 40/40 set. this is a wand and focus set that gives 40% chance of halving recharge and halving casting time for each skill in that attribute. Use this when you are not being targetted and you can quickly swap to defensive set between casts.
(c.) 40/20/20. Similar to the 40/40 but brings along the 20% lengthening of enchantments. usually used for Protection Prayers eg guardian.
(d.) elemental set. As a warrior, you have slightly less damage versus elemental compared to physical, so most melee characters have an extra set (seperate to vampiric and furious) with an elemental mod so they have the slight edge when attacking warriors and paragons with high armour versus physical damage.
(e.) High energy set. Just a wand and focus set with an extra 30 energy. The trick behind using this set is to only use it for the skill, and then swap back to your normal set. This is because your energy set takes off 2 pips of energy regeneration. so it's better if you keep to 4 pips and let it build again, swap, rinse and repeat.

2. PvX will be your friend for now when you get a feel for builds. I suggest trying lots of professions and builds that are in the current meta/still popular because you'll become more comfortable when versus them.

3. Staffs for Necros, eles and mesmers are quite pointless, unless you're lazy to swap between said weapon sets in point 1.

4. Kiting is goooooooood.

5. About purchasing skills, balthazar faction gained from combat helps you unlocks skills, inscriptions, mods, runes and insignias. Basically everything. If you want to make your character look more aesthetically pleasing, either invest into a PvE char you wish to take into PvP, or gain reward points from tournaments.

6. I don't know whether you have all of the campaigns + expansion, but i'm going to have to suggest that you buy them. and then if you've got some spare cash, save some time and buy the skill unlock packs all on the GW online store.

The most important step is to get a guild. Without that you will be left pugging. The pug environment has never really been good, but it is getting terribly worse over time (expect to wait 15-60 minutes to get into a pug group).

As such get a guild with people that play around the same time you play, otherwise you are going to be SOL if you want to do anything remotely organized.

And you also need to add that teams disband very fast ( most of time in Heroes Ascent , any disconnect/afk or lose in 3 first maps makes at least half of the team leave..... pug environment is getting worse and worse there)

However , i would recommend to learn playing healer ( monk or even prism ele ( the easiest )) and to avoid playing melee , since then you will find teams and guilds much easier .
